A critical review of the literature on written expression disorders of individuals with learning disabilities. The purpose of the book is to shed light on issues concerning definition, assessment and interaction for individuals with writing disorders. The integrated model of written expression offered draws on the work of cognitive psychology, neurolinguistics and sociolinguistics. The model illustrates the interrelationship between cognitive and affective processing networks that influence the selection and use of linguistics and information structures in producing a written text. Particularly noteworthy aspects of this book are: the emphasis on the role of writing in developing higher mental functions (other texts on writing disorders have placed greater emphasis on lower-order aspects); not only the addition and integration of the sociolinguistic dimension into the model of writing but also the inclusion of guidelines for assessing this dimension; specification of needed research in which both populations and tasks have been carefully defined; and, finally, notice of the importance of a continuum for defining, assessing and treating each component of written expression. The acquisition ofreading, the teaching ofreading and the difficulties encountered have been ofsubstantial interest to a wide mnge ofresearchers and practitioners for centuries. Given the increasing centrality ofliteracy in modern life they are now of even greater interest to an ever widening base ofprofessionals. The study of the acquired reading disorders, though in existence for over a century, received enormous impetus with the publication of a seminal paper by Marshall and Newcombe in 1966, leading to neuropsychological model building of reading. Over the last 30 years, within the single case study design there has been extensive and exceedingly fme-gmined research on individuals with acquired disorders ofreading, in an attempt to establish the validity ofthese models ofreading and the human brain. In addition these models have had considerable influence on models of the acquisition ofreading in children and their concomitant difficulties. Much ofthis research has been in readers ofthe alphabetic scripts, particularly the opaque English script. During the last decade or so there has been increasing evidence, particularly in research on reading acquisition, that what is true ofalphabetic scripts like English may not be universally true of all of the scripts of the world. This has led to considerable research into the process of learning to read and write and on the factors affecting reading, which are the touchstone ofthe models, within broader cross-linguistic and cross-cultural perspectives.

Clinical neuropsychology typically employs large standardized test-batteries to cover the cognitive deficits caused by brain lesions and neurodegenerative diseases. The neuropsychologist moves between three levels of explanation; the behavioral level, the cognitive level and the brain level. The behavioral level is measured as actual performance on a test, i. e. the obtained test score. The cognitive level refers to the underlying cognitive processes that are reflected in the test scores. The brain level, finally, refers to the neural underpinnings and substrates to the cognitive processes. The recent decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in our knowledge about cognitive processes and the underlying neural substrates. Experimental techniques and paradigms have played an important role in the accumulation of new knowledge in this field. Thus, there is a need to present a collection of experimental paradigms and techniques to neuropsychology. Some of these paradigms and techniques have however a long history in neuropsychology, like dichotic listening and EEG measures, while others are new and novel to most neuropsychologists like animal model paradigms and brain imaging and brain stimulation. Experimental techniques typically aim at discovery of causal relationships and with a focus on search for mechanisms. In the first chapter, Merill Hiscock presents an overview of experimental techniques and its adaptation in clinical neuropsychology, with a focus on behavioral techniques and methods.

The present edition of this book is a revision and expansion of the first two editions which appeared in 1980 and 1985, and in German translation in 1991.
