Residual soils are found in many parts of the world. Like other soils, they are used extensively in construction, either to build upon, or as construction material. They are formed when the rate of rock weathering is more rapid than transportation of the weathered particles by e.g., water, gravity and wind, which results in a large share of the soils formed remaining in place. The soils typically retain many of the characteristics of the parent rock. In a tropical region, residual soil layers can be very thick, sometimes extending to hundreds of meters before reaching un-weathered rock. Unlike the more familiar transported sediment soil, the engineering properties and behaviour of tropical residual soils may vary widely from place to place depending upon the rock of origin and the local climate during their formation; and hence are more difficult to predict and model mathematically. Despite their abundance and significance our knowledge and understanding of these soils is not as extensive as that of transported sediment soil. Residual soils are found in many parts of the world and are used extensively as construction materials for roads, embankments and dams, and to support the foundations of buildings, bridges and load-bearing pavements. The characteristics and engineering properties of residual soils can differ significantly from those of the more familiar transported soils. Residual soil or also known as tropical residual soil is the formation of parent rocks by mechanical and chemical weathering. This type of soil can be found in many countries in the world. The process to produce the tropical soil is still very active and the weathering development is faster than the erosive factor. Besides that, the environmental factor such as topography and drainage also gives effects to the deformation of properties of residual soil. Then, this characteristic will give affect to form the soil strength. Collapsible rate of Gambang residual soil is analyzed using single and double oedometer. The single oedometer method consist of the sample is initially saturated with water under a small seating load and allowed to collapse. The loading is 20kPa, 40kPa, 80kPa, 160kPa and 320kPa. Meanwhile single oedometer consist of testing two nominally identical samples. 0ne sample is test at the initial water content using standard incremental loading procedure and the other sample is, the method consist of incrementally loading a test specimen to reach the desired vertical stress, waiting for vertical deformation to cease, and then wetting the specimen with water at 80kPa. The collapsibility rate of Gambang residual soil is in range of 1% - 5% which can be classified as medium collapsibility. The sample also analyzed using different criterion based on the engineering properties of the sample. The result shows that Gambang residual soil has medium collapsibility. As the conclusion, Gambang residual soil can be classified as medium collapsibility.

There are other books on unsaturated soil mechanics, but this book is different. Unsaturated soil mechanics is only one aspect of a continuous range of soil mechanics studies that extends from the rheology of high water content soil slurries to the mechanics of soft soils, to stiff saturated soils, to unsaturated soils, and, at the far end of the range, to dry soils. In reality, the water content of all soils, that are not permanently submerged, varies seasonally. In most climatic zones, rainfall varies during the year and the depth of the water table varies sympathetically. In applying unsaturated soil mechanics in practice, it is therefore important to realise and allow for the probability that soil will, either seasonally or occasionally, pass from the unsaturated to the saturated state and even from unsaturation to dryness. This is the only book that looks specifically at this essential practical aspect. The theory of unsaturated soils is fully dealt with in all of its aspects, including its application to natural undisturbed soils and compacted soils. Application of the theory to soil-like materials such as mine waste and municipal solid waste is also covered.
