Introduces readers to the far-reaching uses of polymer matrix syntactic foams for developing structures which require lightweight, but high mechanical, properties A cohesive introduction to polymer matrix syntactic foams, this book helps readers understand how the innovative use of porosity can help in developing lightweight materials with high mechanical properties. The author provides a detailed comparison of syntactic foams with other lightweight materials, which are presented in terms of mechanical properties and failure mechanisms. Comparison charts are also included for mechanical properties such as strength and modulus with respect to density. The book also lays the foundation for understanding the matrix materials and microspheres that are typically utilized in the making of these lightweight materials. How the properties and characteristics of syntactic foams can be further improved via the use of reinforcement materials such as nanoparticles, nanofibers, conventional fibers and toughening rubbers, are also considered. By focusing on structural characteristics, the author ensures that readers without an advanced technical background can engage with the subject Includes comparison charts, comparing syntactic foams with other lightweight materials, to visually show trends between them in a clear manner Features a large collection of micrographs of raw materials and different types of syntactic foams Types and applications covered include self healing syntactic foams and metal matrix syntactic foams for weight saving applications such as in aerospace design Coverage of production and processing enables readers to integrate processes into established production chains Growing topics in the area such as nano aspects are also considered Essential reading for Practicing engineers in boat, ship, and aircraft industries working on composite materials, Mechanical engineers, Product designers, Aerospace, Automotive and Naval Industry personnel.

In 1915 the father of modern science fiction contributed to the long list of adventures of the 18th century super-hero, Baron Münchausen. Hugo Gernsback used his magazine Electrical Experimenter as a proving ground for his theory that science fiction could be used to teach science. Never before published as a book, and complete with the original illustrations, this is early 20th century science fiction by the man who made science fiction famous. Hugo Gernsback is often called the father of science-fiction. In 1926 he created the worlds first regular science fiction periodical, Amazing Stories but long before that he tested the market for science fiction within the pages of his science magazines. Between 1912 and 1929 Gernsback was the unchallenged champion of fiction with a scientific edge. In the 1950s the highest award in science fiction was named after him.

This is the second part of a major theoretical work by Patrik Schumacher, which outlines how the discipline of architecture should be understood as its own distinct system of communication. Autopoeisis comes from the Greek and means literally self-production; it was first adopted in biology in the 1970s to describe the essential characteristics of life as a circular self-organizing system and has since been transposed into a theory of social systems. This new approach offers architecture an arsenal of general comparative concepts. It allows architecture to be understood as a distinct discipline, which can be analyzed in elaborate detail while at the same time offering insightful comparisons with other subject areas, such as art, science and political discourse. On the basis of such comparisons the book insists on the necessity of disciplinary autonomy and argues for a sharp demarcation of design from both art and engineering. Schumacher accordingly argues controversially that design as a discipline has its own sui generis intelligence – with its own internal logic, reach and limitations. Whereas the first volume provides the theoretical groundwork for Schumacher’s ideas – focusing on architecture as an autopoeitic system, with its own theory, history, medium and its unique societal function – the second volume addresses the specific, contemporary challenges and tasks that architecture faces. It formulates these tasks, looking specifically at how architecture is seeking to organize and articulate the complexity of post-fordist network society. The volume explicitly addresses how current architecture can upgrade its design methodology in the face of an increasingly demanding task environment, characterized by both complexity and novelty. Architecture’s specific role within contemporary society is explained and its relationship to politics is clarified. Finally, the new, global style of Parametricism is introduced and theoretically grounded.

Wade Mainer (b. 1907) is believed to be the longest-lived country entertainer ever. His banjo lessons began in childhood and he played informally into his adult years, when he joined his brother, fiddler J. E. Mainer (1898-1971), in Mainer's Mountaineers. Music became their ticket out of the cotton mills in 1934. At the time, country styles were swiftly evolving from community-based performance into mass-market broadcast via radio, records, and the silver screen. Mainer's Mountaineers attracted radio sponsors and touring opportunities, allowing the brothers to become full-time musicians. Eventually Wade Mainer formed his own band, the Sons of the Mountaineers. His success secured a permanent place for the fiddle and banjo sound in country music, sustained that sound's popularity throughout the 1930s, and created the foundation upon which Bill Monroe and his disciples would spread bluegrass music in the 1940s. Banjo on the Mountain features Wade's own words and recollections from a lifetime in music and an exciting career that included a command performance at the White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and a key role in The Old Chisholm Trail, a 1944 BBC-sponsored radio play for American troops and embattled English civilians. The volume is rich in photographs and documents, thanks to Wade and Julia Mainer's careful custodianship of letters, professional photos and family snapshots, posters, songbooks, flyers, and other priceless curios.
