Every day there are news reports that highlight spiralling energy costs, accelerating energy consumption, serious concerns over fuel security and fears that oil production may soon decline. All such reports are set against a background of the most serious threat to the world today - global warming and the devastating impact of climate change. This informative and wide-ranging book, written by an acknowledged expert, demonstrates how renewable energy technologies can help meet CO2 reduction targets. The author emphasizes that we need to use these technologies on a much wider scale to produce heat and electricity, and argues that if action is taken immediately it could make an enormous difference. He demonstrates how by installing a renewable energy technology in your home, you will be taking a step towards reducing your carbon footprint and ultimately you will be helping to save the planet. Now in a fully updated edition, this invaluable and well-illustrated book reviews the range of currently available renewable technologies that can provide energy as heat and electricity for our homes, businesses and industry, and also save harmful emissions, energy and money. The technologies are: Solar energy using solar panels for hot water and electricity; Heat pumps, which take heat from the ground for homes and buildings; Biomass fuels such as wood and waste, and even specially grown crops; Wind power, which can provide us with significant amounts of electricity in the decades ahead; Hydroelectricity where suitable rivers and streams are available; The potential of emerging technologies such as geothermal, wave and tidal power. An invaluable and informative book that demonstrates how renewable energy technologies can help meet CO2 reduction targets. Installing a renewable energy technology in your home will be a step towards reducing your carbon footprint. Reviews the currently available renewable technologies tht can provide energy for home, businesses and industry. Superbly illustrated with 78 colour photographs and 20 diagrams. If there are two phrases we have come to know very well, they are 'environmental awareness' and 'credit crunch'. The world is looking for ways to decrease the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere, without incurring major costs in doing so. By increasing efficiencies up to about 90 per cent using well-established and mature technologies, cogeneration represents the best option for short-term reductions in CO2 emission levels. The ability to maximise revenue streams by taking advantage of price fluctuations in the cost of energy supply, and ensuring the ability to supply power regardless of what is happening on the grid, are powerful incentives to use cogeneration. The collapses of the grid networks in North America and Italy in 2003 were a stark reminder of what can happen if there is over-reliance on the grid network. Cogeneration makes sense economically, environmentally and operationally.

This version of the RPM-SIM User's Guide supersedes the October 1999 edition. Using the VisSimTM visual environment, researchers developed a modular simulation system to facilitate an application-specific, low-cost study of the system dynamics for wind-diesel hybrid power systems. This manual presents the principal modules of the simulator and, using case studies of a hybrid system, demonstrates some of the benefits that can be gained from understanding the effects of the designer's modifications to these complex dynamic systems.

Our civilisation stands on the brink of catastrophe. In three generations we have consumed half the world's oil produced over eight million generations. With threats from global warming, fossil fuel depletion and nuclear disaster, we are running out of options. Solar power, Keith Barnham argues, is the only solution. He explains how Einstein's famous equation E=mc2 led to the widespread use of nuclear energy, while another of Einstein's equations, one that has given us the laptop and the mobile phone, has been largely overlooked. It is this equation that holds the key to exploiting energy generated by the sun. A fascinating guide to renewable technology and a critique of the energy industry, The Burning Answer is, above all, an impassioned call-to-arms to join the solar revolution now, before it's too late.

Our civilisation stands on the brink of catastrophe. Our thirst for energy has led to threats from global warming, nuclear disaster and conflict in oil-rich countries. We are running out of options. Solar power, Keith Barnham argues, is the answer. In this eye-opening book, he shows how a solar revolution is developing based on one of Einstein's lesser known discoveries, one that gave us laptop computers and mobile phones. An accessible guide to renewable technology and a hard-hitting critique of the arguments of solar sceptics, The Burning Answer outlines a future in which the fuel for electric cars will be generated on our rooftops. It is, above all, an impassioned call to arms to join the solar revolution before it's too late.

Producing electricity from the sun using photovoltaic (PV) systems has become a major industry worldwide. But designing, installing and maintaining such systems requires knowledge and training, and there have been few easily accessible, comprehensive guides to the subject. Now, with Photovoltaics: Design and Installation Manual, a world-class solar energy training and education provider--Solar Energy International (SEI)--has made available the critical information to successfully design, install and maintain PV systems. The book contains an overview of photovoltaic electricity and a detailed description of PV system components, including PV modules, batteries, controllers and inverters. It also includes chapters on sizing photovoltaic systems, analyzing sites and installing PV systems, as well as detailed appendices on PV system maintenance, troubleshooting and solar insolation data for over 300 sites around the world. Used worldwide as the textbook in SEI's PV Design & Installation workshops, topics covered include: The basics of solar electricity PV applications and system components Solar site analysis and mounting Stand-alone and PV/generator hybrid system sizing Utility-interactive PV systems Component specification, system costs and economics Case studies and safety issues Photovoltaics guarantees that those wanting to learn the skills of tapping the sun's energy can do so with confidence. Solar Energy International (SEI) has the nonprofit mission to respond to the need for renewable energy education. Based in Carbondale, Colorado, and active around the world, SEI is a link between people and renewable energy resources, providing information, education and training to people who want to shape a sustainable future. SEI is recognized by the National Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) as dedicated independent provider of PV training programs that may be used toward attaining PV certification. Also, SEI is recognized as an Accredited Institution to offer PV training by the Institute for Sustainable Power (ISP).

The FRESA computer program, Version 2.1 provides an easy way to collect and process building and facility data to indicate opportunities for renewable energy applications in federal facilities and buildings. The purpose of this analytic tool is to focus feasibility study efforts on those applications most likely to prove cost-effective. The program is a supplement to energy and water conservation audits, which must be completed for all federal buildings and will flag renewable energy opportunities by facilitating the evaluation and ranking process. FRESA results alone are generally not sufficient to establish project feasibility.; The FRESA User's Manual provides instruction on getting started; an overview of the FRESA program structure; an explanation of the screening process; detailed information on using the functions of Facility/Building Info, Building/Facility Analysis, Input/Output, and Weather Data or Adding a Zip Code; troubleshooting, and archiving data. Appendices include Algorithms Used in FRESA Prescreening, Excel Spread sheets for FRESA Inputs, Other Useful Information, and Acronyms and Abbreviations.
